MIT Academy - Mandarin Instructor
Position: Two K-1 Elementary Teachers for the PAUSD Mandarin/English Dual Immersion Program

POSITION SUMMARY:*
The District is beginning a new program, Mandarin/English Dual Immersion, in fall 2008. Two full-time positions are available. Mandarin/English Dual Immersion program Teachers will be responsible for teaching Palo Alto Unified School District standards and curriculum in English and Mandarin. In the K/1 program, instruction will be 80% in Mandarin and 20% in English. The teacher is also responsible for teaching English and Mandarin listening, reading, speaking, and writing to support students in achieving bi-literacy in both languages by the fifth grade using strong instructional practices and differentiation strategies that meet student needs. In accordance with the Ohlone model, teachers will be expected to use developmental teaching strategies and to collaborate with colleagues and work well with parents and the community.

It is our hope to hire candidates who are able to begin working and/or take advantage of opportunities for curriculum development and training in spring 2008. A federal grant allows the District to hire teachers part-time or full-time in March 2008. This is not required for applicants who are not available at that time.
QUALIFICATIONS:*
* Hold a multiple subject teaching credential
* Fluent in Mandarin using Pinyin romanization, and literate in both
simplified and traditional versions of Chinese characters
* Know the latest methodology and pedagogy for teaching Chinese (training is available in summer 2008)
* Are able to use technology, including Chinese soft-ware
* Can differentiate instruction to meet student needs
*PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES:*
* Believe in bilingualism and immersion education
* Are creative and enjoy teaching children
* Willingness to attend workshops and seminars to enhance teaching
We prefer candidates with:
* BCLAD or recent CSET certification in Mandarin
* Previous experience with language arts programs including foreign language
* Experience in teaching at the elementary level in the United States preferred
