Title: Principles of Speech Production and Their Implications for Foreign Language Teaching
Abstract:
Native speakers of a language often fail to recognize that speech production and understanding is an extremely complicated process. For learners of a foreign language, the challenge they are facing is understandably a lot greater. On the one hand they have to learn a new system of phonological contrast, which could be vastly different from their native language, and then acquire the ability to make the sound distinctions in their speech. On the other hand, they need to make hypotheses of lexical items based on the phonetic information they are able to derive from the continuous speech signal, which is characterized by extensive variability. In this talk, I will discuss some general principles of speech production in terms of the relations between the discrete linguistic features and their articulatory and acoustic manifestations, and illustrate how foreign language teachers can apply these principles in understanding and analyzing issues in their student’s non-native speech, and making well-informed pedagogical decisions.
Bio:
Zhiqiang Li received Ph.D. in Linguistics from MIT in 2003. His areas of specialization include phonology, phonetics, Chinese linguistics and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. He has been teaching Chinese language and culture since 2003 at Boston College, Tufts University and University of San Francisco. He is currently the coordinator of the Chinese program at USF. In addition to teaching and research, he has been actively involved in promoting Chinese language teaching and Chinese proficiency test (HSK) in the Bay Area. He was elected the vice president of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of California in November 2010.
留学生成语习得与成语教学
语言的规则性和习用性是语言使用的两大原则。语言的习用性表现为在语言使用中人们运用大量的语块。汉语中的成语是语块的一种,本文从成语教学的必要性以及当前对外汉语成语教学现状出发,着重分析汉语成语的语法特点以及留学生在习得汉语成语时出现的形式、语义、语法以及语用偏误。汉语成语一个最基本的语法特征是其在使用时句法功能高度受限,不像一般词语那样自由。留学生在使用成语时出现的语法偏误也与汉语成语的这个特征相关。本文最后还提出了一些有关成语教学的建议。
