The San Francisco Unified School District has an immediate opening for a Mandarin Literacy Specialist to work in their well respected Mandarin Immersion Program at Starr King Elementary School and Jose Ortega Elementary Schools.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The specialist will assist with Chinese language development in Mandarin (listening, speaking, reading and writing) of students in the Mandarin Immersion programs. The job consists of both small group and one-on-one instruction. The teacher must be able to work with the Mandarin Immersion classroom teachers to identify particular areas of need and students in need of support.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
§ Native-like fluency in speaking Mandarin, reading and writing in simplified Chinese form
§ Knowledge of Chinese customs and culture
§ Be familiar with California State’s Foreign Language Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve and the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in 21st Century
§ Be knowledgeable of current teaching methodologies, strategies and research, which support implementation of district-approved immersion programs
§ Be knowledgeable of the content of immersion programs
§ Be knowledgeable of the pedagogy for teaching Mandarin to non-native as well as native Mandarin-speaking students
§ Ability to plan and implement challenging lessons
§ Ability to use a variety of materials
§ Ability to be a cooperative player on the educational team
§ Be knowledgeable of effective techniques for classroom management
§ Be able to use differentiation and engagement strategies
§ Knowledge of evaluation and assessment of student progress
§ Use of technology
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
§ A current California Teaching Credential: Single Subject in Mandarin with CLAD (authorization to teach English Learners) OR Multiple Subjects with supplemental in Mandarin and CLAD OR out-of-state equivalent OR active enrollment in a university intern program (minimum G.P.A. of 2.5)

§ Legal authorization to work in the U.S
§ Bilingual and biliteracy skills in Mandarin and English
§ Professional teaching experience in bilingual, immersion or foreign language classroom preferred;
§ Outstanding and/or Highly Satisfactory Summary Evaluations.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS
§ Serve as Mandarin literacy specialist to elementary school students in the Mandarin Immersion programs at Starr King Elementary School and José Ortega Elementary School
§ Implement Chinese language arts in Mandarin and multicultural curriculum, as defined by program staff
§ Responsible for the instruction and welfare of students in the assigned Mandarin Immersion programs, in small group and whole class settings, in accordance with the provisions of the Education Code and the Policies and Procedures of the Board of Education.
§ Maintain adequate profiles of individual pupil progress and conferences with parents.
§ Participate in staff development activities related both to immersion/foreign language as well as district programs
§ Maintain home-school contact
§ Work and plan with colleagues of the Mandarin Immersion teams
